Many of the pool of Alternative Rock Idols have come on in leaps and bounds since August/September. The list probably reads a little different to the tips in publications that are sent every release going, but are performing equally well due to the fact that they are the recommendations of people that are at new live band clubs all the time. Every band that played the four Alternative Rock Idol Live shows at Pop Of The Tops have all taken a step further.. in other words, they pulled it off. When a load of musicians, DJs and their friends come together they can do anything. Like punk happened! Digital Sneakers have a record of something very special and some future stars up close and personal. They are editing short films for each of the bands and in increasing demand as cutting edge music visionaries. Their six minute rockumentary, "Tears In The Launderette" features as an extra track on the Special Needs debut single "Sylvia"/"Tarts" which will be released by Twinstar Revolution records in January, quite possibly the East End's most styish and on the case/in the place label. Between them, the bands are all picking up regular gigs (and great!) and further ivents, , interest from top record companies, distributors, booking agents and even media attention including an NME single of the week, The Face etc. Three of them are included in two hot tour packages (New World Disorder - Nov 003 and a hot tour package in Feb 004) . There's a session and interview going out on XFM for one band, and more than one of them have been getting support from various stations. "Genius" said Steve Lamacq on one band. "Struck gold" said a top producer on seeing another. Others have picked up top support slots where they instantly swelled their fan bases. Drowned In Sound interview and BBC6 Music chat with Steve Lamacq. All well deserved and not even a hint of how far they could go!
More than a handful of them have releases imminent. Three of them are on two excellent compilations already ("The New Cross" out now - a compilation of art punk beauty - on Angular Records and "Fear Of A Black Kennett - the love music hate racism compilation, alongside Asian Dub Foundation, Kinesis, Chris T-T, King Adora etc - on the anti-establishment R*E*P*E*A*T recordings). Art Brut's PR and management has greatly increased and they also look after Dan Cairns of Anti Idol fame who has just recorded "How High Is My Waste Band?" with Ciccone. Art Brut/Nikkidido.com have some very special events in the pipe line. A couple of the bands are recording over the next couple of months, putting them a further step on by next Summer. Demos are flying around like busy bees so keep an eye out for these bands, for the film, for the huge spread of talent waiting in the wings. Check out the fanzines and webzines and join the exciting party that is the undervround pop explosion. Obviously, as Music Tourist Board only formed in September this is just a begnning, but it's not a bad start? contact
